    Starting a Blog

One question I often get pertains to starting a blog. How do I do it?

Even though I could lead you down a simple path and tell you to go to a website that offers free blogs like blogger.com and sign up but that is not the way I would go. Sure you could go that route if all you want to do is keep an online journal and you are short on funds.

To start a serious blog you need a few things
    1) A Domain name
    2) A Web hosting Account
    3) Blogging Software
    4) A Topic

    1) A domain name is the url that people will type into their search browser to pull up the site. You want to keep this as short and sweet as possible. If your name is Joe and you want to start a gardening website your domain should be something like Joesgarden.com

    2) Web hosting has come a long way in the last few years. You can now get web hosting from companies like GoDaddy or Bluehost for under $5 a month. If you choose a web hosting company to work with odds are you can find a coupon for like 20% off so look around before you choose a web host.

    3) Blogging software usually comes with your web hosting panel but if it doesn't you can always go to Wordpress.com and get it for free.

    4) A topic should be something you have some knowledge on or you are becoming an expert in. It should be a fun topic that doesn't feel like work so the writing part becomes easier.

That is just a quick summary of some stuff that you need to get started.

what is your opinion on the many services that provide 'auto content' to post into one's blog? (e.g. rss feed content inclusion, etc.)

Autoblogging can work when it is done right On the couple of sites that I have some autoblogged content, I mark it as Syndicated so there is no confusion that I am taking credit for it. Some sites can be considered aggregators so that your site visitors find all the information about a topic all in one place. Be sure that you also include original articles as well because if you are all syndicated content the search engines will penalize your site.

Done well, it is a win win, done incorrectly it's not good for anyone.
